Mayor of the Cooma Monaro Shire, Dean Lynch, says that the council wants to cut it's contribution to funding of the Rural Fire Service.

While he admits that the service provided by the RFS is invaluable, Mr. Lynch says that the current funding arrangements are unsustainable.

Right now local councils are responsible for nearly 12% of the RFS's total budget, two hundred and seventy million dollars.

It's a burden that the Mayor says cannot continue, and alternative funding arrangements must be organised.

The State Government is conducting a review into the matter.
