The NSW Rural Fire Service Association has praised its fire-fighters on International Volunteer Day.

The day is celebrated annually, and yesterday saw volunteers recognised for their tireless efforts in answering calls in times of crisis, helping save lives, and helping locals live with dignity.

RFSA president Ken Middleton says fire-fighters are committed to protecting lives, homes and properties, and it's important they are recognised.

Mr Middleton says the RFSA fire-fighters cover from suburban Sydney to the most remote locations in NSW.

He also says they put their own lives at risk to help others, any many of the 74,000 members are currently preparing for another fire season.
